Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day to all in advance! This is a cover design for a greeting card assignment from school. I thoroughly enjoyed doing it and I hope it makes your day upon seeing this

The overall size is 8cmX8cm big which is really cute and easy to keep. It is printed on a matte 270gsm textured paper. In the final print, the speech bubble is also being cut out and pasted on the card with a foam tape to create a pop out effect.

*Kindly note that the photos of the printed card is taken with my phone camera hence the color difference from the digital copy. In real life, it is the same as the digital copy.

2012 New York Toy Fair display illustration

I recently completed a giant display illustration for TeeGee Toys, who will be first-time exhibitors at the 2012 New York Toy Fair this Feb 12-15. At 10'x8' it is literally the biggest job I've ever had! I'm super excited that my work will be on display at one of the coolest events in the world. Below are some shots of me with the final display before it has its debut in NY.

Designers Around the World for CE x SINGHA Thailand

An Official Press Release for CE Contest II will happen next Tuesday January 31st, 2012 at the Siam Center (well its one of the most famous fashion mall in Bangkok, Thailand). This will be the first step for the main project event which will be running along until the Final Battle which is on March or April.

The official key visual is the theme "CE Want You", and due to public demand the deadline of submission is moved to Feb 20, 2012. Designers have to submit their proposals and designs to mafiafactory@hotmail.com only.

The House of Illustration Competition

The focus of this year's competition is the fantastic book, 'The Bloody Chamber' by Angela Carter. It is a collection of dark reinventions of classic fairy tales. Having just completed a children's picture book, I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to create some sinister pieces of illustration. Below are my four entries for the competition as well as the passages that inspired each image.

Pig on a Trampoline

Pig on a Trampoline - three pieces, each 408 x 231mm
Acrylic on 140lb Saunders HP Watercolour paper

This is an idea I had, a series of images of a pig at the top of its bounce. I drew about a dozen poses, some more absurd than others, before arriving at just these three.
Before any porcinologists tell me, I know, pigs don't bend that way. Well, my argument is, a trampoline can be very persuasive.
The lack of eye contact is intentional because I want the viewer to remain disconnected with the pig. It's as if we've just turned a corner and happened upon her, gleefully bouncing away in her own little moment of joy. She'd never know if we simply, and quietly, back away and leave her to it.

This idea led to a concept for a children's picture book. Hopefully I'll get round to completing it, eventually.

For those that way inclined, here's a closer look at of one of them.

24 Hour Drawing

If you could spend 24 hours working on anything, what would it be? This was the assignment for my drawing elective. The project was simple. Buy an A0 (841mm × 1189mm) sheet of paper, get a pen and draw whatever comes to mind. No sketches, no rubbing out, no starting over; just ink to paper.

We were given two weeks to spend a total of 24 hours on one piece of art. This is the most honest insight into my twisted, bizarre imagination; straight from brain to hand. Click to enlarge.

Here's my latest work for Outdoor Utah. The art director had a couple of specific ideas in mind and asked for color sketches for each. Above is the final one that was chosen. I went with a bit of a Japanese woodblock influence.

This is the other image, which I liked enough to finish it even though it wasn't chosen. This one is very heavily influenced by my former college adviser and amazing illustrator Robert Meganck. It may in fact be teetering on "blatant rip-off," but I've been wanting to do a Meganck-style illustration for awhile now.

Below are the initial pencil sketches with digital color added.

The past few weeks have been really busy with various commissions and in particular, wedding Illustrations. I've recently had the pleasure of working with a lovely girl from New York, called Ann, on a portrait for her wedding (see above). The brief was to create an image of a bride and groom kissing in a very romantic and whimsical style. The Illustration is going to be printed on tote bags which Ann and her husband to be will be giving to guests as a 'welcome' at their reception. What a sweet idea!

Ann was amazing to work with, so lovely and open to ideas. I'm so excited to see how they go down at her wedding next year!

The long hard look in the mirror

It's difficult being an ordinary-looking human in a world where one no longer has the option of whether or not to be advertised at. You may have been recently subjected to marketing which has forced you to confront an example of the ideal human form, as paraded by a digitally enhanced model. You may have been unable to resist comparing yourself alongside and subconsciously noting that if you invest in product x, you too might be beautiful and happy with a massive gleaming shiny white smile. You unfortunately get no say in this matter, a pre-packaged thought has been seeded into your mind, and whether or not you want it there, it's there. Sometimes it's barely possible to have an internal monologue for more than a few minutes before one's train of thought is interrupted by a bright picture bellowing down at you from a billboard, the side of a bus, the pages of your newspaper; chipping away at your self-image, brazenly suggesting to you that there is probably room for improvement.

Reflecting on this got me thinking about they whys and wherefores of some of the long-winded and probably ultimately pointless beautification rituals I have been persuaded to follow. Here are some of my sketchbook doodlings on this subject anyway.

Did these sketches of a nice couple I met earlier in the year when I was in Bali. They really loved the sketches and asked me to send them a copy once I got home. But, life got busy and before I knew it, many months had gone by. So I finally got them sent, but not before adding a nice sepia tone and more of a paper texture to the background in Photoshop. I really kind of like how they came out and am tempted to do this treatment to some of my better sketchbook entries.

Summit Brew header illustration

I got to illustrate the header image for a brand new website called SummitBrew.com, started up by outdoor journalist (and beer-drinker) Jared Hargrave. The premise of the site is for contributors to climb a peak, and once there drink an exotic beer, then later write a review of both.

For the image, I ended up going for the look on an old, weathered, painted sign from the 50's, or possibly an old style tourist postcard.

This is the original approved sketch.

This the inked drawing, which I did at roughly 3'x13'. Its times like this I love Photoshop's photo merge feature. The landscape changed quite a bit once I looked up some actual reference images for Utah. Note I originally showed the guy with a six-pack, but changed it when the client pointed out the safety hazards of mountain climbing after that much consumption.

Here is the final again with the six-pack magically transformed into a healthy whole wheat sandwich and a back of chips.

Fishing Boats

Following on from my tractor image where I revisited an old sketchbook drawing, I have produced another illustration based on my travels. I made the initial drawing two years ago, whilst in Cornwall. The patterns of the scene - made up of the boats bobbing up and down on the rippling water were what appealed to me most. I have used quite a bit of negative space with this image, which helps to depict the gentle motion of the water.

As an exercise, I reproduced Bere only using my palette knife, with no blending. It required the marks to be more considered, in both mixing and placement. I used acrylics because I wanted this to be a quick exercise. The Bere I did in oils at Christmas is still too wet to varnish. Call me impatient!

The drawing was made whilst on a train going through the Cambridgeshire Fens several years ago. The contrasting pattern of the ploughed soil with the patchwork of fields in the distance, really appealed to me. I hope you like the resulting artwork...

One morning in the spring of 2010 I was in the Museum Quarter of Vienna waiting for the Leopold Museum to open. On a bench nearby, a splash of colour surrounded by dull stone, was a girl asleep. As soon as I saw her I knew I had to paint her. I took several photographs from different angles, moving around quietly as to not disturb her.
I have no idea who the girl is. I went into the gallery and didn't see her inside and she was gone when I came out. Maybe Leo arrived.

The latter image has been used for the cover of the journal and I am rather proud to be responsible for a graffiti face appearing on such a prestigious publication. I must point out that I did not draw the face, as that would be illegal, only photographed it! Perhaps photography should play a bigger part in my work in the future..?

Hoardings

I am currently participating in a brief set by Ian Anderson of the Designers Republic entitled Hoardings. The idea was each participant received a life size photograph of themselves and was instructed to edit it in a style of their choice.
I decided to turn myself into some kind of mutant form of myself.
These will be printed onto a wall surrounding the construction site of a new art/design building at Manchester School of Art, and will hopefully be printed into a new book at some point.
I am pleased with how this turned out :)

I spent the majority of October hiking in the Nepalese Himalaya. I completed the Annapurna Circuit and in doing so passed through various beautiful and baffling villages whilst admiring the stunning mountain ranges. Here are a selection of my photographs and drawings made during the trip.

News from Rachel Lewis: My work getting published in They Draw and Cook!

This is really amazing news; my work has been chosen to feature in a new book, They Draw and Cook, in America next spring! I'm among 100 or so other illustrators to have recipe illustrations featured, I have to say, I am so excited about this!

They Draw and Cook is an amazing little website; every day they post a new illustration from around the world, I submitted 2, one made the book, but think mine are still in the queue! Go check it out, so many fantastic recipes on there, really need to try some out.
When the book is published I'll get a copy for myself so will of course post pictures, which will be in 2011... I'm sure it'll be worth the wait though!
